Task 7
The preliminary task was the first task where we tested our filming and editing abilities. we were very limited in what we could produce as we had very little knowledge on different shots and editing techniques. we were also limited with the amount of time we had to produce this product. We learnt lots of different methods for filming after our preliminary task and got to know the possibilities with iMovie, allowing us to produce a higher standard opening scene for our finished product. Below is the preliminary task which we did for research and planning.
Compared to our final edit of our opening scene shown below, there are very little techniques used and a small variety of camera angles in our preliminary task. it is edited poorly unlike our final piece which has smooth transitions and a wider variety of camera angles.
From our preliminary task we have adapted our skills and techniques in a few ways. Firstly our editing was a lot better with different length cuts for certain different effects. We also used fades between cuts toggle a sense of what the character was feeling like. Camera angles where used in a much wider variety, from establishing shot, medium close up shot and and a panning shot. The use of these different shots allows the viewers to get a feel of the surrounding area and in some cases the urgency of the scene. we used various different camera stands to get clear clean shots whereas our preliminary was shot by hand for quite a lot of it not giving us a very good shot.
We also focused on the mise en scene for this scene, including the outfit the characters were wearing to show the audience their background and facial expressions to show the pain and the and urgency from the characters, whereas in the preliminary the characters wore whatever they had and their facial expressions weren't set, as shown when they were laughing. The camera used in our preliminary was poor and gave a poor sound quality whereas we made sure to use a bittern for the final piece. also we edited the scene to have sound over the top whereas we didn't have the ability to do this previously

Task 4
The audience of our product would be anybody, as depression is a huge thing that should be understood by everyone. however are main audience are students aged 15-17 as depression occurs quite a lot during this time and this will be their first experience of it and so will need to know how to deal with it or if you don't have it how to help others around you who might. Our film shows viewers all of the things that could go wrong with depression and how people with it might feel if they are left alone with it to handle themselves. This means that out of all the students aged 15-17 our main target audience are those people who don't suffer from depression, allowing them to help those who do.
Our audience would also be people who enjoy coming of age films and films that are quite personal and emotional. This might not be a very big audience as our film is quite specific however what we would be achieving for our audience is far greater than most big blockbuster films, as they might bring entertainment but ours will bring support and guidance.
Hi, my name is Steven Baker, I'm 16 and am diagnosed with anxiety and depression. I felt that 'Dejection' was an extremely relatable film for me, as i felt i had a lot in common with the main character in terms of the area i lived and the type of personality i have. The message the film was portraying was extremely important to me, even though the ending was sad it gave me hope and reassurance that the people around me will always be there for me and help me in times of need. Although this film might not be my friends and family's idea of a 'good film' they will learn more from this than they think and it will maybe open up their minds to the people around them and their thoughts and feelings.

Task 3
The type of media institution that would distribute our opening sequence would be an minor company like film 4. this would be good because our film would have a very low budget and very little recognition after making our film, however film 4 are well known and any movie they distribute will already have a fan base which will guarantee sales in box office without any advertisement from the producing company. Although if solely wanted to make money off of our film and we would use a company like 20th century fox or Warner bros, but our film is based around sending a message to viewers and is more for the use of helping others rather than making a profit.
Film 4 are a well known professional distributing company and have produced films like '12 years a slave' and 'Inbetweeners 2'. These are just two of their very successful films and will give anybody who knows our film is being distributed by Film 4 will be extremely well made.
Although Film 4 are a good company they rely on a low budget when producing and distributing films, so they will have to co-produce the film with a production company we designed our self's. This company is called 'Stonehenge Productions'. They are a British company who started producing British films and slowly adapted into coming of age films.
Below is an improvised interview with film 4's manager on how their company works:

Task 2
The pills used for our character show him as what teens are stereotypically perceived to be, 'drug users'. This stereotype usually comes from older generations, however this isn't the case with Thomas as he is only taking drugs to end a bad situation.
